Camp Bay is the name of both the sprawling white-sand beach on Roatan’s northeast end and the small local village that sits at its furthest point.
Scattered amidst the natural foliage behind Camp Bay’s stunning seashore are several private homes, including Caulfield’s Cottage, in a section referred to as “Anderson Colony”. It’s a tranquil area which evokes a sense of remoteness without being utterly isolated — within a short distance are some lovely places to explore and activities to experience.
Oak Ridge (the closest community with a fuel station, bank, and small grocer) is 10 km to the West on mostly unpaved roads; from there, several south shore communities are easily accessible via water taxi. French Harbour (a central island community with many amenities) is 15 km away.
Camp Bay presents a world of breathtaking beauty, where encounters with our island’s alluring culture and enchanting escapades into the natural landscape await.
Experience Roatan’s innate cultural charm and stop at one of the neighbourhood’s pulperias (little shops) to pick up basic goods.
Wade in the gentle surf or lounge atop the white sand while you take in endless views of the Caribbean Sea’s varied-turquoise hues.

Two years after the Royal contingent had raised the Union Jack at Augusta Camp in New Port Royal, there were complaints by several of the contingent — having brought their families here to settle and farm the area — that the land around Port Royal Harbour was unsuitable, and thus set out to explore on horseback other areas of the island.
Three soldiers (Murray, Barnett, and Crosby) were eventually given title deeds by Caulfield at Anthony’s Cay (in the modern day settlement of Sandy Bay), each of them receiving 100 acres on the rich, sandy soil plain that extended one quarter mile inland.
Colonel Caulfield had joined them in their initial search and particularly enjoyed wading his gout ridden feet in the island’s northeastern seashore, no doubt wiggling his toes in the soft sand. Actually, the beach was mapped as “Sandy Beach” by Lt. Henry Barnsley in 1742, but later was renamed “Calm Bay” by the first British permanent settlers from Cayman and Belize. Today it is commonly called Camp Bay. Caulfield left Roatan (“Rattan” as it was called then) in 1749, and died in 1753.
One of the executor’s of Colonel Caulfield’s will was his close friend George Knapton, renowned portrait painter and surveyor and keeper of the King’s pictures from 1765 to 1778. Knapton painted this portrait of Colonel Caulfield with the following description :
Major, later Lieutenant Colonel John Caulfield (d.1752), Commander-in-chief of the Island of Rattan. Painted after 1743, probably circa 1750
If you look at the map under his right hand you will notice it is a map of Roatan; follow the map to the left and you will see two shaded areas at the area currently known as Sandy Bay, which would be two of the three parcels issued by Caulfield in 1744.
We’ve provided a copy of Caulfield’s last will and testament in the loft at the cottage. It makes for entertaining reading in itself, full of family intrigue!
